The Future Earth would like to offer kudos to Whole Foods Market for voluntarily ceasing to offer plastic bags to its customers in honor of Earth Day this past Tuesday. Customers will now have the choice between recycled paper, bringing their own bag, or purchasing a reusable one. We hope more retailers will follow their initiative.

Great news!
As positive as this is, it's difficult not to imagine that there was some cost/benefit analysis at the corporate level of Whole Foods: this is a relatively painless gesture for them to make, but which will reap great approval from their customer base. Timing the announcement with Earth Day tells me that they definitely wanted to wring maximum publicity out of the change.
What would be really interesting is if the positive customer response led them to make even grander gestures—like ending the trucking/shipping of produce from distant locations in order to rely on local suppliers. Or, just bringing their prices down a few notches... so that people of lesser incomes could shop there. Well, I can dream.
