Encyclopedia of Life

The Encyclopedia of Life is now online. The goal of the site is to make a comprehensive catalog of every species in the world available online. This is a work in progress, but it is interesting to peruse.

This is so cool... I'm glad to see it up and running. I was wracking my brain, trying to remember where I had heard about this; eventually Wikipedia's entry came to my rescue. E.O. Wilson had described the idea in a "dream" speech at the 2007 TED conference. And voila... one $50 million seed grant later, here it is.

This is certainly the kind of thing that fulfills the promise of the Internet. it's sort of the polar opposite to online gambling.
